Preparing and Getting Started with Breastfeeding Class
Research from around the world shows breastfeeding is the healthiest choice for both
mother and baby. Breastfeeding is a natural process as well as a learned art. We find
that the more information and resources new parents have, the easier it is to successfully
breastfeed. Combining lively discussion, lecture, visual aids and an information packet,
we offer classes to help prepare parents to get a good start with breastfeeding.

Topics covered in the class include:
- Advantages of breastfeeding
- Anatomy and physiology of the breast
- Benefits of skin-to-skin contact
- Practice of rooming-in with baby during the hospital stay
- Positioning the baby at the breast
- Breastfeeding during the early post-partum period
- Overcoming difficulties
- Life with a newborn
- Evaluation of breastfeeding supplies including breast pumps
- Community resources for new parents

Drawing on our 25+ years of experience working with new families and babies, we will share what
we have found to be most helpful for getting breastfeeding off to a smooth start. We recommend
taking this class between the fifth and sixth month of your pregnancy. It has been our experience
that at this point participants are best able to absorb and retain key concepts, while having
adequate time to gather more information and line up postpartum resources.
We encourage expectant mothers to bring their partner/spouse, friend or a family member to the
class. We offer the one session group class for $45. This fee covers registration for both
participants, a take home packet of information and follow up telephone support. Homemade
cookies are served during the break.
Group classes are offered 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm for patients from:
